Have you heard of Fusion Mineral Paint? I hadn't either until the little shop across the street started carrying it. All I can say is this stuff is amazing!

I purchased this chaise at a vendor mall for $35.00. I had visions of my greyhounds chilling on it all stretched out. Not to mention, it would make a comfy place to relax and read.
This ugly chair must have been a good one in it's prime. The cushions are down inners with ticking outside. I purchased some good quality cotton for the cushion covers since it won't be used that much. Plus it was cheap! The zippers were recycled from the original covers. Apparently someone chewed the piping on the covers in it's previous life, so I had to make new ones. All in all, I am pleased with the piece.
Probably because it has been FOREVER!

Lots of things have been going on here. My grandson is now almost 6 years old and will be starting Kindergarten in the fall. If you think time flies when you children are little, it goes even faster when you have grandkids!

Personally I have been fighting the battle. The cancer battle. I will give you the short story.

On October 31, 2016 I went in for a routine mammogram. I have been having mammograms since I was 27 (that's a long time, by the way) due to fibroid cysts. After having to go back in after the results were read, I decided a few years ago to just stay in my robe and wait for the results.

This time, I just kind of had a nagging fear in the back of my head. But here comes the tech, calling me back for more views. Not quite my idea of a good time. This mammogram device was surely invented by a man who was trying to get revenge on some woman.

The radiologist read the new views and decided there was something suspicious. I was scheduled for a needle biopsy two days later. Nothing worse than waiting, especially when you are waiting for that kind of news. On Friday I finally received the call. The doctor said the results were inconclusive and it now became a surgical issue.

On November 14, 2016, I underwent the knife for a lumpectomy. Again, the lab here got inconclusive results. By this time, my nerves are shot. More waiting. When I went for a follow up with the surgeon, he had just gotten the results. It was cancer. Pure tubular carcinoma of the breast. Thankfully, my surgeon got clean margins and no further surgery was needed. He also said he had to give massive credit to the radiologist as this tumor was so small, and on the chest wall, that he was surprised it was even detected.

Then the fun starts. All this information is flying at me, barely any time to digest it. I met with the radiologist and oncologist and they decided I would undergo radiation treatment. I underwent 30 radiation treatments. So thankful I didn't need chemo. Thankful for lots of things.

To say this experience has changed me, would be an understatement. To be faced with your own mortality is very eye opening. I'm positive I can say I have kicked cancer in the ass. You can't get rid of me that easily!Mad Red Harehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07129668480876429229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6920761637509009307.post-5411050130754447672016-09-28T06:54:00.000-07:002016-09-28T06:54:05.290-07:00Lionel Trains
My father passed away in 2007 and one of his favorite past times was his Lionel train collection. This was no run of the mill collection, his love of trains occupied the entire attic of our big old house. Warning, post contains a lot of pictures. I hope you enjoy!
At that time, he had his trains in the attic at his parents house in downtown Indianapolis. Mom and Dad's first house was a tiny ranch, and with 3 young kids, there definitely was no room for them there. When I was 6 years old, my parents purchased an older home about 4 miles east of downtown Indianapolis, just off of Washington Street. Finally, my dad could have his trains in his own home.
In 1983, my mother decided to leave the marriage. Dad had a bit of a hard time adjusting to single life and went through a period of depressions. Even his beloved trains couldn't help. Finally in 1985 he met a lady. In 1986, he prepared to sell his house and packed up his trains. I know this from the newspapers he gently wrapped his collection in.
My stepmother relinquished dad's collection about 4 years ago. To me. When they first came, I went through the 11 totes and boxes. There were empty boxes and I searched out the corresponding trains and put them back. At the time, I was still a bit grief stricken, so back to the garage they went. I didn't tell my brother and sister as I had intended to make it a surprise for them for Christmas.

Fast track to today. I was cleaning out my garage last week and decided it's time to get them out of those totes and let someone enjoy them. There are literally hundreds of trains. Diesel and steam engines, box cars, coal hoppers, caboose. etc. Buildings, some metal and some hand made by my dad.
We had a great day of cooking out and reminiscing about the trains. Bobby knew way more than my sister and I did about the trains. I took a few to have on display. My sister set up a little display for herself. I gave each of my girls enough to have a train under their Christmas tree. The rest went to my brother who plans on setting up a train display in his attic. So after a lifetime of collecting, my dad's trains are finally going to be enjoyed again.

Several years ago (I'm too embarrassed to even tell you how many) I attempted to do a block of the month follow along for this Underground Railroad Sampler quilt. I think I only managed a few posts and I finally got mine finished.

I got my pattern from the Quilt In a Day book titled Underground Railroad Sampler. The stories behind the blocks are amazing and I really enjoyed making this one. I was able to complete this quilt using my scraps. This really got me thinking about how they used to make their quilts out of necessity back in the day and not just for fun.

In my attempt to plan menus better this year, I decided to reach into my recipe box and try some old favorites. This slow cooker recipe for Continental Chicken is from my original crock pot book. I won't say just how old that is, but I'm sure in some circles it's considered "vintage".

Continental Chicken

6-8 chicken breasts (I prefer to use chicken breast tenders)

6-8 slices of bacon

1 package of Buddig beef

1-10 ounce can cream soup

1/4 cup sour cream mixed with 1/4 cup flour

Arrange dried beef on the bottom of greased slow cooker. Wrap chicken breast with bacon and lay on top of dried beef. Mix soup and sour cream/flour mixture together and pour over chicken. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or high 3-4 hours. I usually serve this over a bed of rice or noodles along with green beans or broccoli.

We have this huge blue pole barn along the side of our back yard. Not my favorite thing to look at, that's for sure! This spring I finally got a start on trying to make it less of an eye sore.

One thing we have around here that I do love are dragonflies. Even though it's early in the season, they are already making their appearance. In the summer I love watching them hover above the pond and flit around the yard.

I gathered up some "junque" to make my own version of the dragonfly. Some fan blades, a spindle, white paint, screws and a few eye hooks.

I love how it turned out! I wound up using some old insulators for the eyes instead of the glass globe in the previous picture. Not quite sure if you can judge the size by the photo or not, but the wing span is almost 4 feet.

Stay tuned for more junque decor on the pole barn!

This includes trying new recipes. I dug deep into my recipe box for this one my mom used to make, Supper on a Bread Slice.

Growing up, my mother was a stay at home mom. My dad didn't make much money, he was a clerk for a medical supply company. Mom had a very strict grocery budget. Until I got married, I never realized what a great job she did feeding our family of five on that budget.

Dinner time at our house was at 5:15 every night. No excuses. We couldn't have friends hanging out waiting for us, they had to go home. We also sat at the dinner table, said grace and there was no television or radio allowed to be on in the house. Some folks would say it sounds kind of strict. But really those were the good old days with family.

Supper on a Bread Slice

2/3 cup evaporated milk

1/2 cup cracker crumbs

1/2 cup chopped onion

1 1/2 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon pepper

1 1/2 pounds ground beef

1 egg

1 tablespoon mustard

2 cups grated cheese

one loaf french bread

slice cheese for top garnish

Combine ingredients. Cut one loaf of french bread in half lengthwise. Spread meat mixture evenly over top surface of bread. Then wrap in foild around crust side of each half leaving tops uncovered. Place on cookie sheet and bake in 350 degree oven for 25 minutes. Garnish with strips of cheese and bake 5 minutes longer.

I remember someone telling me just wait till you have grandkids, it's the greatest. Well, it sure is! This little boy is full of life and love. He always says "I love you" and gives you kisses. I can't believe another year is gone already. I must be getting old because time is flying by.

Resolutions. I have never been much about making them, but I am thinking it might be time. Maybe putting it out there will help me be more accountable. So here it goes!

1. GET ORGANIZED: I want to work hard to get my life and home organized.

2. DE-CLUTTER: As I am getting older I have thought a lot about the "things" that I have. What will happen to them when I'm gone? My kids will probably have a huge garage sale. So I'm going to work on donating and pitching things.

3. SHED SOME POUNDS: After losing the 70 pounds a couple of years ago, I have gained about 30 back. I lost about 20 last year, but gained that back again. I need to stop this yoyo business and get healthy. After having gall bladder surgery this summer, it's time to get back into the swing of things.

4. EXERCISE: I really need to get on the exercise band wagon. My knees, hip and back are killing me. I've been going to the chiropractor and haven't had the results I have in the past. I'm thinking I need to get stronger.

5. RECYCLE: There's a new trash service which gives us a huge recycle container, so I'm going to try to be more environmentally friendly. I've been a sporadic recycler in the past, but this will make it easy for me. No sorting needed, just toss it in the can.

6. DON'T WASTE ANY FOOD: I absolutely hate wasting food. Nothing pains me more than throwing away spoiled food. So I'm on a mission to be better about that.

7. PLAN MENUS: Now that the nest is empty, I really need to get better about planning menus. This includes using my crock pot as much as possible.

8. BLOG MORE: I have really fallen off on my blogging, posting as well as reading my favorite blogs. I don't want to set myself up for failure, so my goal is to at least post something once a month. I can surely do that, right?

I just found this post saved as a draft today. Click HERE to see the before pictures of the pantry.

Located just across from the kitchen is our pantry. There is a pocket door to close if I need to keep certain 2-legged kids or 4-legged kids out occasionally.

At the end of the pantry is the remains of a closet from the bathroom that we took the space from to create the pantry. I removed the louvered door and put up the curtain so when I need to, I can pull the curtain to the left and use the hook to allow me to get in there and get what I need. This space is good for bigger appliances, paper products, canning supplies, casserole dishes, odd shaped pans and the bigger recycle bins.

There are 2 sets of adjustable shelves that go from the floor almost to the ceiling. I keep all my staples on these shelves. These are great to stock on up everyday items.

I use baskets to organize packets other small items. Cardboard flats, great for storing canned goods.

I purchased half gallon mason jars to hold pastas, rice, and other dry goods.

This spice rack is probably my favorite thing about the pantry. My husband cut out the drywall between the studs and framed up this spice rack. Staggered shelves hold various sizes of spice jars.

We also purchased a small deep freeze. Having a side by side refrigerator, our freezer space was very minimal. This allows me to stock up on meats and vegetables. Shelves above the freezer are adjustable as well. Cook books, dog items (first aid kit is within reach) and cookie tins are kept here.

Another favorite storage item are these canisters from Sistema. These canisters come with their own measuring cup. No digging through the drawer to find a cup and no dirtying a bunch of measuring cups when baking. I always find these at Marshalls or TJMaxx.

Click HERE to read the beginning of the story. Well, needless to say, I didn't continue and have done a bit of back sliding. So, I am going to switch gears here and try to focus on my weight loss again and healthy recipes.

I'm going to put my weight numbers out here, because I think making it known will help me with this adventure, AGAIN. I started out in 2009 weighing 221 pounds. Yikes, I hate even thinking that number! After 14 months of Weight Watchers, I lost 71 pounds and got to my goal weight of 150. Weight Watchers is kind of unrealistic with their goal weights, so my doctor and I had a meeting of the minds and decided 150 was a very realistic number for me.

Fast forward to January 3, 2015. I weighed in at home on that day and weighed 185.6. How in the world did 35 pounds creep back on my body?! I was so aggravated with myself as the weight just kept piling back on the past 4 years. So, time to do something before I gain the entire 71 pounds back!

While I am a lifetime Weight Watcher member, I decided to try a different approach this time around. I am using the My Fitness Pal app on my iphone. Based on my information, the app has allowed me 1200 calories a day. Which seems realistic for me. I am finding the app very user friendly
as well. Also, a friend of mine through facebook started a little group for a few of us greyhound lovers. Mostly, it is a support group, diet hints, and recipes.

When I started this adventure, I decided I would give myself 30 days to see how it went. I am happy to report that as of January 30, 2015 I weighed in at 175 pounds. Down 10.6 since I started this re-adventure.

Today, I leave you with this quote from my dad...
This is the best roast ever! The cranberry and onion soup mix are a good combo. The gravy is awesome on mashed potatoes too!

Ingredients:

Small Roast
One can jellied cranberry sauce
One packet onion soup mix
2 Tablespoons flour

I placed the roast in the bottom of the slow cooker. Spoon the jellied cranberries over the roast and sprinkle the onion soup mix over it. Put the lid on and cook on low 6-8 hours or until done. About 30 minutes before serving, sprinkle the flour over the liquid to make the gravy.
The wedding party, casual but still fun. My oldest daughter, Jennifer, is the Matron of Honor.
Her bouquet is fabric flowers that we made. We used vintage buttons from my wedding dress and some jewelry from her grandmother. It was a lovely day. Here's to many more happy years together!

Megan is getting married! We have had a fascination with mustaches since my grandson's baby shower. So when the girls started planning Megan's bridal shower, we knew we would have to incorporate the mustache theme.

Megan is marrying her best friend, Chris Mills. He is currently active duty in the Army and stationed at Fort Bragg. The wedding is going to be on May 17, 2014 in the Smoky Mountains.

Our front door decorations. Chipboard letters covered with cardstock, mounted on ribbon, spell out "I DO". I even added a little mustache!

Once inside, guests were greeted by this little vignette, complete with their engagement picture in a chalkboard frame. We are using this as our countdown calendar.

We had a journal where guests were asked to write some advice to the young couple. Next, we asked everyone to write down their favorite memory of Megan and place it in the jar. We read these at the end of the shower and Megan had to guess who wrote them. One thing, this kid has a lot of caring people who have been involved in her life, most of them since she was a young girl.

One of the games was to make a wedding dress out of rolls of toilet paper. The girls broke into groups of four. Each group picked a girl to be the "bride". Then they took 3 rolls of cheap toilet paper and made a dress. Megan's friend Krystia and her group had the best dress.

The grandson, Geoffrey, is getting so big! He turned 2 on October 17th and his momma turned 31 on the same day. This collage are pictures from his three Christmases. The far right picture is his first Christmas, bottom left is his second Christmas, and the upper left is Christmas 2013.

This is a very rare moment when Geoff is actually being still. He is one busy little boy. Everyone tells me that is typical for boys. Having only had girls before, this is all new to me!

I love using my slow cooker, it is so nice to come home from work to a meal that is ready to serve. I am trying to do better about meal planning this year. Today is my husband's birthday and he loves stuffed peppers, so I found a couple of recipes for inspiration and this is what I came up with.

Crocked Stuffed Green Peppers

4
large green peppers
1 pound ground turkey
1/3 cup onion,
chopped (or 1 teaspoon onion powder or 1 tablespoon dried onion
flakes)

1 egg, beaten
1 8 ounce can of tomato sauce

1 8 ounce can of water

1 15 ounce can of diced tomatoes,
undrained
1 package of Spanish rice (I used the Rice
a roni brand)

Cut tops of peppers and clean out the inside. In a
large bowl mix the ground turkey, onion, egg, Spanish rice, tomato sauce and
water. Mixture may be a bit runny, but it will be fine. Fill
peppers with the meat mixture. If you have extra of the mixture you can spoon it on top of
the peppers.

Place a liner in your crockpot, this
makes clean up a breeze! Then dump the can of diced tomatoes on the
bottom and place stuffed peppers on top. Cook on low around 6-8 hrs.

Just for fun and I have nothing better
to do on this freezing day in January, I did an internet search for
“green peppers male and female”. Somewhere, sometime I
remembered reading that in bell peppers, there are males and females.
I have no idea if this is true or not, but here are a few things I
found on my quest.

Supposedly, three bottomed bell peppers
are male, while four bottomed peppers are female. Three bottomed
bell peppers are “sweeter and better for eating,” while four
bottomed bell peppers are “firmer and better for cooking”. Some
say they don't notice a difference in taste or texture between three
bottomed bell peppers and four bottomed bell peppers. Makes total
sense to me! Just like the women in my family, “firmer and better
for cooking”!!! Female bell peppers have more seeds than males and
some advise that you buy “male” bell peppers at the grocery
store. I am assuming the thought process on this would be since
females have more seeds it causes them to weigh more, and if they are
bought by the pound, they would cost more for something that you are
going to clean out and toss in the compost anyway!

It's been way too long since I posted, but I wanted to wish all my friend Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. It's hard to believe that we've been in our house almost 16 years. Lately, I have been finding myself in a bit of a funk. So, I've been thinking that maybe I need a change in my surroundings. Time to shake things up a bit around here. I don't have pictures of the actual curtains at the doors yet. They only had one panel at the store, so I had to order them.

I also splurged and got new rods. For all these years, I have had a closet pole for a rod. I needed something sturdy that would go across the French doors without sagging. The lady at the JCPenney Home Store was so nice to help me find something. Also, I was able to buy 2 panels since they have grommets and stack back nicely.
I am hoping to get things done around here this year. I am also hoping to get back into blogging again. Now, I'm not making any resolutions...Mad Red Harehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07129668480876429229noreply@blogger.com0
